Holy Writings

"She was the Church from the time of the apostles and not the product of their writings; she used these writings, not following them word for word, as a pupil copies an exercise from outside, but treating them as a mirror and yardstick to recognize and restore her image, in each new generation." - Yves Congar

Epiphany

Each year we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany, which commemorates the visit of “the Wise men” with the Christ child. We generally call them kings but the author of the Gospel of Matthew called them “magoi” and seems to suggest there were astrologers. The story tells how they saw a light rise in the darkness and set out on a journey, of unknown length, to follow it, like truth, wherever it may lead.
The cathedral in Cologne Germany has what traditionally is regrading as the skeletons of those ‘historic’ wise men. The famous “Kölner Dom” was built in the 1200’s to house them and provide space for visitors. The building survived WWII and even today around 6 million people a year visit the legendary mortal remains of the men who visited the Christ. The bones were brought to Germany in 1164 from Milan. There is some question how they got to Milan but what is known is there were originally in Constantinople. They are now in a gold sarcophagus near the altar.

After the Magi gave their gifts; gold in tribute to a king, incense for sacrifice to a god, and myrrh for anointing the dead they then returned home. The author was careful to point out by another route, because they had been transformed by the encounter with Christ and could not go back the in the same way they came.
